What Tutors say about their experience in the Program

"Earthen Vessels was my first means of finding a genuine community at Harvard. I felt genuinely welcomed, and it gave me a chance to reach out at the same time... It has been a means of growing in faith for me, and that has been very important. There's something about interacting with the kids that makes the faith part much more real. The most rewarding moment for me was when Arnita said she felt she could tell me things that she couldn't tell anyone else."

"For me, the Earthen Vessels experience was an introduction on how to live the Catholic life. It has been an experience in lived idealism, on how to make the world a better place."

"Earthen Vessels for me was as much a spiritual experience as a cultural one. It showed me issues of the inner-city which are very, very different from the issues I experience at home. It's taught me how to let your faith help you take a stand."

"This year, I learned a lot about being strict and encouraging at the same time. Earthen Vessels is the first community centered on faith that I've ever been a part of. After some struggles with Marky, I saw it come together at the end. It was a pretty beautiful thing to see come together. My first two years in the program, when I was with James, I was playing Lacrosse, and I felt like I really let him down. I realized that it's about real people, and my actions and priorities have an impact on the world outside myself."

"In my experience at Harvard, very few of the people I interacted with put their ideas and values into practice. I've been frustrated with that. Outside of this community, I don't know any people who have really made an impact on the community beyond Harvard. In this four year stretch with Mic, I've really seen her grow and I've been able to have an impact on her life. The most rewarding moment was when she said, "Can you believe it?! I was accepted at three colleges!" Tutoring has been a great part of my college experience and the relationship with Mic has been a big part of it. The introduction to concerns of the inner-city has also been important."
