OUR May 1st CHOCOLATE BUFFET AND SILENT AUCTION A GREAT SUCCESS  AND A LOT OF FUN FOR THE WHOLE EARTHEN VESSELS FAMILY, FROM TUTORS AND TUTEES FROM YEARS GONE BY TO BRAND-NEW ARRIVALS

The EV family gathered at the Langham Hotel Boston for a delicious Chocolate Buffet and the exciting end of our silent auction, with bidding heating up considerably as the time was running out.

Esmeralda & Kamille Latoyia-Isabel-Bianca George-Lauren-Nancy

Tutors Esmeralda and Kamille helped out with sign-in and subsequent payments for winning bids. Several former tutors and former tutees or campers joined us, including Carla Ofodile and her husband, Ilo; Anthony, Cruz; and former camper and tutee Latoyia Edwards of New England Cable News Network who MC'd the event with great energy and humor. Board member Eric Thompson, who spearheaded the auction, along with former camper and counselor Shelby Pierce, set up the remaining items for the final round of our silent auction. Artist George Bard, a former volunteer counselor whose watercolor of Mt. Mansfield led to some of the fiercest bidding, can be seen here with Program Director Lauren Ravello and Educational Coordinator Nancy Jiménez. It was fun to see old friends and to meet others who we hope will become friends and supporters. Board Member Jaime de Zengotita, who tutored during college and the first two years of Medical School, was happy to see his former tutee, Anthony Cruz. He was also the surprised winner of the first EV Distinguished Service Award for his many contributions: a framed copy of George Bard's beautiful watercolor. Tom Jackson and DePaul Patterson spoke movingly of their experience together in the Tutoring Program. Board member Anjali Gupta brought along the youngest member of the EV family.

The auction and event raised a total of some $10,000 to help keep our programs for inner-city youth up and running. Many thanks to our sponsors, all those who donated items for the auction, the volunteers who helped the evening run smoothly, and a special shout-out to Eric and the event committee, Carlos and Beth, for their hard work.

Pastry Demonstration and Tasting in Jamaica Plain  On March 11 we held a  fun fundraising event at Nuestra Culinary Ventures. Organized by Board member Jaime de Zengotita,  a former EV tutor currently working as a physician in Jamaica Plain, the evening brought together some thirty people to learn how to put together a delicious chocolate cake with cherry sauce under the expert guidance of Chef Bradley Brown, a pastry chef whose desserts have brought meals to a luxurious close at Sonsie, the Garden of Eden and La Bettola and now is the proprietor of the acclaimed Blue Frog Bakery. We watched a master of his trade prepare one of his delectable creations before our very eyes. There followed a tasting and an opportunity to spend time with him. A tutor-tutee pair , Liz and Ashley, shared their experience at EV. All in all, a delicious learning experience which benefited our program. What's not to like?

Saturday October 20, 2007 The Camp Reunion we hold each fall at Harvard brought together many of our camp counselors and campers for an afternoon of fun, with games in in the the park in front of the Kennedy School, a peek at the Head of the Charles Regatta where our own Amanda would be rowing the next day, sharing of reflections about camp , and a few favorite songs like "Charlie on the MTA," "Country Roads," and "Let it Be." It was great to see everybody again.

Saturday April 28, 2007   The Tutor-Tutee Day we hold each semester at Harvard brought together many of our Harvard Tutor-Mentors and their young inner-city charges for an afternoon of fun and reflection.

Thursday April 19, 2007  We held a fundraiser in the form of a cheese tasting under the guidance of an expert from Formaggio's in Cambridge, Robert Aguilera. He presented six different farm cheeses beyond the typical brie or camembert, each paired  with something delicious to nibble on, all accompanied by appropriate wines. The event took place chez Dan Thompson in Belmont.  It was an extremely pleasant evening, with delicious food and drink, an eloquent and enlightening presentation, good company, and a moving presentation by a tutor-tutee pair (Liz and Ashley, in the middle of the middle photo, below) about their experience together over the past two years.

Due to a snow storm on March 17, we had to move our annual Community Event to Saturday April 14, 2007 at our Tutoring Center at St. Christopher's Church in Dorchester. Tutees prepared skits, poetry and dance, Nancy and Lauren collected door prizes for all our families, and the families brought  delicious dishes to share. It was a chance for the entire tutoring community to gather to celebrate progress and get to know one another better.
